Air conditioning works best when it's planned with the rest of the house in mind. Because we design and install heating systems every day, we'll be sizing air conditioning the same way — room by room, based on how the space is actually used — rather than just fitting the biggest unit that's on offer. Can air conditioning heat my room as well as cool it?
Yes. Modern split systems are air-to-air heat pumps — they cool in summer and run in reverse in winter to provide fast, efficient heating. Many customers end up using the heating mode as much as the cooling.
How much does air conditioning cost to run?
Less than most people expect. Because a split system moves heat rather than generating it, it typically delivers three to four kilowatts of cooling or heating for every kilowatt of electricity it uses. Exact costs depend on the room, the unit and how you use it.
How disruptive is the installation?
A straightforward single-room split system is usually installed in a day. The indoor unit mounts high on the wall, the outdoor unit sits outside on brackets or a base, and they connect through a small hole in the wall — no major building work.
Which rooms is air conditioning best for?
Bedrooms, home offices, loft conversions, conservatories and south-facing extensions benefit most — anywhere that overheats in summer or is hard to keep comfortable. A multi-split system can run several rooms from one outdoor unit.
